			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Not two weeks ago I had a chat with someone (an SEO) about some online media buying and although the figures made an infinite amount of sense (6 figure monthly page views – prime location banner purchase for less than £90 per month!), he said, “but there is no SEO value from the banner link” (it was JavaScript)!  Astonished, I spent the next hour arguing the case for buying the coverage, but it would seem that the majority of SEOs just <span id="more-2123"></span>don’t see the value of applying traditional marketing techniques to the web – they just don’t “fit” into the SEO mindset.</p>
<p>What is really bizarre though is that while the optimisation industry doesn’t see the value in some less search engine focused marketing techniques, they will pay a veritable fortune for paid links.  The likes of ReviewMe (<a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.reviewme.com)">http://www.reviewme.com)</a> change up to $250 for a single “review” (which is SEO speak for a plain text link not so subtly hidden in a purpose written article).  One text link.  One!  Not just that, but a single text link on a new page that has no PR (and will maybe only will ever receive minimal PR filtered through from other page links)!</p>
<p>For that $250 (around £150) there are so many different options you could aim for.  While a lot won’t have any direct SEO benefit, we still need to consider traffic and branding benefits.</p>
<p>$250 would allow me to buy banner advertising on a niche site / forum / blog for a limited amount of time.  Depending on the type of site and its subject area you could be looking at a decent amount of traffic, enquiries and exposure – certainly enough to justify the cost.</p>
<p>An alternative would be to spend the money on a directory listing on a site such as TheBestOf (<a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.thebestof.co.uk)">http://www.thebestof.co.uk)</a> &#8211; £10 per month for a year and you get a full page listing (written by your local contact), an audio advert where you can pitch your service, inclusion in a high traffic site and a direct (SEO friendly!) link back to your site.  A link AND qualified traffic – that’s like SEO Christmas!</p>
<p>Online marketing professionals do focus on SEO a lot and that isn’t a bad thing – it just isn’t the only thing and you should be looking to spend your budget wisely and spread your marketing scope.</p>

<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t need the Internet to advertise &#8211; I&#8217;m a local business!&#8221;</p>
<p>Okay&#8230;</p>
<p>If you could spend &pound;0.04 (or $0.05 in the US) and have a new<br />
customer &#8211; what would you do with your local business<br />
advertising budget?</p>
<p>I hope you would spend that money again and again!</p>
<p>Granted this is the ideal example and you are likely to pay much<br />
more then &pound;0.04 per customer you acquire, BUT &#8211; h<span id="more-2113"></span>erein lies the<br />
rub for local businesses:</p>
<p>An internet presence announces your business to the world. </p>
<p>When you are online, you have little control about where traffic<br />
is coming to you from (if you are not actively driving traffic<br />
that is), but what if you could make sure that people who lived<br />
in your area, who buy your goods and would make ideal customers<br />
could be targeted!</p>
<p>Google Adwords can help you target local people, not people from<br />
New Zealand if you live in the UK &#8211; but people close to you. </p>
<p>Pinpoint geographic targeting of prospects is an optimum use of<br />
your local business advertising budget.</p>
<p>Is it 100% foolproof?</p>
<p>Alas no, but it&#8217;s a good start. </p>
<p>How do I do it?</p>
<p>Well the easiest way to do this is as follows:</p>
<p>Create a national campaign with your search terms and your<br />
location terms &#8211; eg: If you&#8217;re a plumber in Poole then &#8220;plumber<br />
poole&#8221; would be a good keyword.</p>
<p>Create a geo-targeted campaign (this can be done in a couple of<br />
ways &#8211; I&#8217;ll leave the nitty gritty details out for now) which<br />
means your ads are served to local people when they search for<br />
your keywords. </p>
<p>So in the plumber example if a local person types in &#8220;plumber&#8221;<br />
and doesn&#8217;t mention anything else, your advert will be shown.</p>
<p>So goes the theory anyway.</p>
<p>Does it work all the time?</p>
<p>Like I said &#8211; Not always very well.</p>
<p>This is because Google uses IP addresses to determine location<br />
and this method is somewhat of a cleaver when a scalpel is<br />
required.</p>
<p>It all depends how diligent ISP&#8217;s are when allocating IP<br />
addresses to their customers, the only way you can know is<br />
through empirical means.</p>
<p>What if the regional targeting is producing no results?</p>
<p>If this is the case then a national campaign with location terms<br />
included (as mentioned above) is your best bet.</p>
<p>If you were to run a national campaign on the same keywords<br />
without the location terms, you will be competing with other<br />
players who have a national presence for your particular<br />
product/service which could prove very expensive.</p>
<p>Your local business advertising budget spend should at the very<br />
least give Adwords and PPC advertising in general a tryout.<br />
Remember there are an infinite number of keywords in any target<br />
market.</p>
<p>Just because the big boys may have a stranglehold on the<br />
&#8216;obvious&#8217; terms does not mean your market is saturated</p>

Debemos agradecer a un accidente afortunado (y a la insaciable curiosidad científica) la creación de uno de los electrodomésticos más importantes para el funcionamiento del hogar.</p>
<p>Corría el año de 1946 cuando el ingeniero e inventor estadounidense, Percy Spencer, se encontraba trabajando en el perfeccionamiento de un radar a través de las ondas generadas por un magnetrón. Mientras estaba realizando pruebas, notó que una barra de chocolate que se encontraba junto al magnetrón se derritió sin ninguna razón aparente. Su curiosidad científica lo llevó a investigar el misterio (demos gracias por esto sino el <a href="http://www.mabe.com.mx/productos/microondas.aspx?f=1&amp;parent=7">horno microondas</a> probablemente no existiría). Como todo experimento necesitaba variables por lo que probó poniendo un maíz y un huevo junto al magnetrón: el resultado fue el mismo, los alimentos se calentaron produciendo palomitas y huevo estrellado. <span id="more-2264"></span></p>
<p>Como resultado de la batería de pruebas llegó a la conclusión de que la exposición de los alimentos a la energía de baja densidad en las microondas era la responsable de hacer reaccionar las partículas del chocolate, el maíz y el huevo. Pocos días más tarde (y sin saber que el <a href="http://www.mabe.com.mx/productos/microondas.aspx?f=1&amp;parent=7">horno microondas</a> revolucionaría el mundo) construyó una caja metálica sellada para no dejar escapar la energía. <p>Several pricing models have evolved to dominate the online advertising market. The biggest change over the last few years is the emergence of performance-based pricing, mainly composed of CPC pricing, due to the increasing popularity of paid search. CPM pricing has remained relatively stable in the 40%-50% range over the past few years and has actua<span id="more-2107"></span>lly seen resurgence over the last two years, driven by new interactive display ad formats, such as rich media and videos. Hybrid models have experienced the biggest areas of decline as advertisers move more toward a strict branding or strict performance pricing format. This is a positive trend as it reflects a trend of online spending, more closely mimicking offline media spending. Through the first half of 2006, 48% of advertising revenues were on a CPM basis, 47% on a performance basis (i.e., CPC/CPA), and 5% on a hybrid basis (i.e., has some display and performance features). This compares to 43%, 10%, and 47% in 2000.</p>
<p>CPM (Cost Per Thousand)<br />The CPM pricing model is commonly used for display and rich media advertising and is similar to the pricing model for offline media, where pricing is determined by broad audience exposure. For example, a $10 CPM means it costs $10 to show the banner on 1,000 page views. High-quality inventory can command a $20 plus CPM for a static banner ad and $40 plus CPM for a rich media/video ad. A run of network CPM would be in the $0.50-$3.00 range. </p>
<p>Cost Per Click (CPC)<br />The CPC pricing model, which is also commonly referred to as PPC (Pay-Per-Click), is a performance based advertising model that evolved from paid search. Within the CPC model, an ad may be viewed many times, but the advertiser only pays for the ad when someone actually clicks on it. As a result, the CPC model encourages publishers to display relevant ads that will illicit an actionable response from consumers. There are two types of CPC models:</p>
<p>Auction-Based CPC Model. An auction-based CPC model combines CPC with a dynamic pricing that is set by the advertisers, not the publisher. The advertiser bids on how much the keyword is worth. When a user searches for a particular term or phrase, the list of advertisers appears according to the order of bidding. Overture created the first auction-based CPC model and holds a patent on the broad model. Given that keyword search competition is based on an open marketplace, one could see how pricing on highly profitable terms could increase rapidly. Depending on the search engine, minimum bids on a search term may start at $0.01 and may be as high as $50 or more for high price products (such as private jets or malpractice lawsuits). The average CPC is still well below $1, likely in the $0.40-$0.60 range. </p>
<p>Hybrid CPC Model. The Hybrid CPC model combines bidding price with a number of other factors that are determined by the publisher, most notably the quality of the advertiser¡¯s message and the resulting likelihood that users will click on the ad. In other words, a combination of the bid price and the relevancy of the ad to the search query determine the position of the ad. While Overture pioneered the basic auction CPC model, Google developed the Hybrid model and has enhanced it every year, generating significantly increased monetization, far beyond most estimates. As a result, the monetization gap between Google and Yahoo! has widened, promoting Yahoo! to develop its version of hybrid pricing, code-named Panama.</p>
<p>Pay-Per-Call (PPC)<br />Similar to CPC, the Pay-Per-Call model is a performance-based advertising model, whereby search engines and directories can charge advertisers on a per lead basis. In the PPC model, ads are rendered with the company name, address, description, and a trackable toll-free number that redirects the consumer to an advertiser¡¯s actual phone number. Advertisers pay the PPC provider based on the actual calls made to the tollfree number. PPC represents an attractive opportunity as only 42% of the<br />20 million small and medium-sized businesses (SMB) in the United States have a website, and SMBs have demonstrated their willingness to pay for phone-based leads as evidenced by the approximate $16 billion in annual Yellow Page advertising spending. I expect PPC to become a natural extension of local search and to expand the search marketplace to include merchants who do not have websites or lack search marketing expertise. Pay-per-call has the opportunity to close the loop between online searches and offline buying.</p>
<p>Cost Per Action (CPA)<br />The CPA pricing model is a performance-based model commonly used by advertisers, whereby an advertiser only pays the publisher when a sale or lead or some other defined action is taken. The CPA model is attractive as a merchant only pays an affiliate when a specific result is achieved. Additionally, the merchant assumes little risk in their advertising as they set the price they are willing to pay for the action only. Virtually all direct marketing companies use some form of CPA marketing as a component of their online marketing mix. The two most common forms of CPA pricing are utilized in affiliate marketing as well as lead generation. Affiliate marketing is responsible for 10%-15% of all eCommerce revenues. Additionally, advertisers are increasingly turning to lead generation, given the fixed price nature and the ability for CPA agencies to generate significant numbers of leads for advertisers.</p>
